Record: Mijares ‘Vivir Asi’

This record happened almost by accident. In October of 2007, Warner Mexico called me to do a record for another artist on their label. The artist kept putting off coming to record vocals until the very end. In order to meet the delivery date, we needed to begin mixing and after a week or so, he would come to LA and sing. Then we’d put the vocals in and finish quickly. Two days before we were to begin mixing, he emailed Warner and said, “I know I should have mentioned this before, I’m very sorry, but the songs just aren’t me….” So, for the time being, we had a record and no singer. Fast forward to a year and a half later and four unsuccessful attempts to secure another artist or artists and Alejandro and Cristina Abaroa had the idea to contact Mijares. Lucky for all of us, he agreed.
The record peaked at number 1. It was in the top 10 for 2 months and was certified Platinum just after Christmas of 2009. Without Mijares’ enthusiasm and amazing talent, this record never would have been and certainly never would have been the success that it was. I was lucky enough to produce and arrange it. The record features some impressive guest artists as well: Ricardo Arjona, Pandora and Daniela Romo. Additionally, I got to do one of my favorite songs of all time, Barry Manilow’s ‘Could It Be Magic.’ It was a serious challenge to find a fresh approach to this classic and, in the end, Barry loved it. What a thrill!
